Barkley Sound

Enjoying the life at anchor on Effingham Bay

Hey everyone,

Thank you for your patience on this late blog post. Although we returned to Olympia on July 2nd, we're only now mapping out and uploading pictures of this leg. We've been so hyper-focused on our next departure--the BIG turn south (woohoo!) and the myriad of details and repairs and projects it entails--that we put everything else on the back burner. Apparently, it takes a lot of work to get a boat ready for long ocean passages. But with less than a month away, we're almost there!

In the meantime, enjoy our brief look at Barkley Sound and our return home. If you get a chance to visit the Sound by sea, spend some time here. Get to know Ukie (Ucluelet), hike to all the Bamfield beaches, kayak through the Broken Island Group, and explore the sea caves of the Deer Island Group. Our favorite memories of the sound are from our visit here in 2014 as we didn't give it the time it deserved  this year. This area is one of the best-kept secrets of the PNW.

West Bamfield

For years, volunteers ran a trap/neuter/release feral cat colony where they supplied food and water, veterinary assistance, and warmed outdoor shelters off the boardwalk in Bamfield. Above is a picture from our visit to the cat colony in 2014

This year, we were surprised to see the space grown over with shrubs and this memorial out front. We hope this means the organization was a full success?
