Navigating the Unexpected

Update on May 10th: After a week in Powell River, we're starting to feel much better. We plan to leave tomorrow, May 11th, and feel excited about continuing our trip. To curb the spread, we'll continue to quarantine on the boat along the way until we repeatedly test negative.

Later on, we may add a map and post about our travels since our previous post. Or we may not--the brain fog has been thick this week!

-----

If you follow us on Marine Traffic or IridiumGo, you may notice we haven't made much progress north. In fact, we're further south since our last post! Don't worry, our delay was expected. At least most of it was.

The expected: We planned to stick around for Cailin and Anthony's wedding at the end of April here on the Sunshine Coast. They initially planned it for 2020, but the pandemic repeatedly postponed their plans. The final celebration was elegant, fun, and so uniquely them. Dave's family could finally gather after over two years apart. We had a reason to celebrate. And safeguards were put in place: guests were vaccinated and tested and the venue stayed well ventilated. Everyone involved did everything they could to keep guests safe.

The unexpected: Still, things happen. We got covid. And despite being fully vaccinated, we're feeling it pretty hard. We're now isolating on De Novo in Powell River. There's medical care here if we need it, but so far we're able to treat it from the boat. So far, no cases from the event have required hospitalization, thank goodness. We'll need to wait to continue our adventure north; we don't want a relapse and we certainly don't want to spread it to the isolated communities up north.

We'll keep this post updated as our situation improves.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear about this development! I doubt that most of us will be able to avoid a run-in with COVID now that it seems to be a regular part of our lives. Glad you have an option for quarantining and that you are taking care of one another.

    1. Thanks, Alison! It could be so much worse. If you're going to get covid while traveling, being on a boat is the way to go. I think we're starting to turn the corner.
