Landfall in California!

Sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge Hello everyone, Life is good aboard De Novo. The "Big Left Turn" at Juan de Fuca Strait finally happened, and after years of anticipation and hard work, we're celebrating.  The Oregon and Washington coasts can provide extraordinarily challenging conditions; in fact, several cruisers who've crossed the Pacific warned us this leg would be among the hardest. The horror stories are out there: boats lose their steering; sails rip; sailors grow seasick and weak. So naturally, we were nervous. But with nerves comes preparation. Lots of preparation. Oh lordy did we prepare. Or in Brian and Lauren's words on SV Griffin, we "frontloaded the hard." Because honestly, this leg felt good. Sure we saw some high winds and confused seas, but De Novo and her crew handled it. Shockingly, we didn't get seasick. We had only relatively minor breakages (a functional part of our whisker pole broke and our fuel gauge sending unit packed u...

The Kingdom of Tonga: Season Two

"Fofola e fala kae talanoa e kāinga" --a Tongan proverb literally meaning "Lay out the mat so the family can chat," an expression of communal wellbeing, cooperation, and understanding. Malo e lei lei family and friends, We finished the last post at The Boatyard Vava'u in November 2024, after our rudder forced us to turn around from Ha'apai.  Once we completed the lengthy to-do list to prepare the boat for an extended stay in the tropics, we returned to the States the long way.  Vava'u to Nadi (Fiji) to Los Angeles  to Seattle took about 32 hours(!) with layovers.  I suppose it's all relative though. After all, sailing to Vava'u from Seattle took over three years! Being a passenger on an airplane is easy: no night watches to keep, no weather forecasts to check, no reefs to navigate. The plane just goes! Getting Back to De Novo   Our return flights were more complicated. We came back in March, before flights from Nadi to Vava'u commenced for t...

We Get By With a Little Help From Our Friends

Big Sur, California To me, cruising always meant quiet reflection and independence. In the most remote parts of British Columbia and Alaska, Dave and I would often go days without seeing other humans. As an introvert, I didn't mind. Quiet was my paradise away from the bustle of a big city and a social career. But we knew the California Coast would be different. Here, sailboats often meet up and explore ports together. And while Dave was excited about the social opportunities, I was a little hesitant. What if anchorages feel crowded? What if we don't find our people? What if it doesn't feel like cruising?  Change is hard. We are from the land of the Seattle Freeze after all, and that freeze comforts frozen people like me.      But here's the thing: the sailing-cruising community is rad. And bear with me because of course I'm generalizing. Sailors are welcoming. They're open to new experiences with new friends. Most seem to get into cruising to live authenticall...
